Being involved in sports and fitness for 15 years, it has become my life and my passion. I have lived in Abbotsford all my life where I’ve played many sports including softball, soccer, basketball, volleyball, track & field and rugby where I went on to play for the BC U19 team. After graduation I attended Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia for my first year and then returned to Abbotsford to attend SFU and UCFV to finally attain my degree, a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Kinesiology. During this time I prepared for triathlons and weight trained off and on.
Being involved in so many sports I found myself enjoying being in good physical shape but I wanted to more. I wanted to be like the women that I’ve seen in Oxygen Magazine, truly inspiring. As the interest for the sport of Figure Competition grew so did mine. It wasn’t until I attended the 2004 BC provincial Bodybuilding, Fitness & Figure Championships that I officially decided that I would compete, but the timing just wasn’t right. Firstly, I completed my degree, had my second child and by the spring of 2006 I was ready to train hard 110%!
In Figure, the emphasis is placed on aesthetics - beauty combined with an athletic physique. My training officially began about 6 months pre-contest.
I weight trained 5 days/week, while I taught boot camp and group exercises about 4-5 x/week. When I was 16 weeks pre-contest I was strict with my nutrition, only eating whole grains for carbs, protein & good fats - 6 small meals/day. I also began cardio 6x/week which increased to twice a day when I was 8 weeks pre-contest.
So for the last 2 months I was at the gym 3x/day and training for a total of 3 hours.
This sport is yet one of the most difficult sports I have “played”. Between training and dieting you sure learn a lot about yourself and gain a lot of respect for those that you compete with.
Recently I just sold my “Survivor BootCamp” business here in Abbotsford as I was finding it difficult to juggle everything that I had on my plate. As I have been told us “A” types never like to pass up an opportunity!
I also teach group exercise classes, offer personal training and next year will be completing my Education Degree to teach at the secondary school level. I love staying active and helping those around me reach their goals. Wish me luck as I prepare for another figure competition, BC Provincials, this summer. Who knows where the road will lead but just remember:
Life is not about the number of obstacles or challenges we face but it’s about “how” we face them and the strength we gain from those journeys. Just remember that we pave our own paths, where do you want yours go? NO Regrets!
